On To Jerusalem

Luke 21:12-28

The Parable Of The Returning King

A nobleman who became a king
A king who was rejected
The return of the king
It was a parable to prepare the disciples for what was ahead

Now It Was Time To Go To Jerusalem

The triumphal entry was ahead Palm Sunday
His betrayal and trial were ahead
The cross and resurrection were ahead

3 Reasons Why Jesus Ascended to Jerusalem

Jesus Ascended To Jerusalem Because It Was Time

read Luke 19:28-35

Our Lord was always on time

Mine hour is not yet come John 2:4
My time is not yet come John 7:6

Now His time had arrived

Daniel´s amazing prophecy would be fulfilled   Daniel 9:25

Note the timing of events that day

The colt was there for the disciples to find  Luke 19:32
The owners were there to react as prophesied  Luke 19:33

God´s great plan of redemption was right on schedule

A great preacher, Dr. William Culbertson, once said:
Calvary was not God´s afterthought. It was His forethought.

Jesus was coming into to Jerusalem to die  right on time!

Jesus Ascended To Jerusalem To Fulfill The Scriptures

read Luke 19:36-39

Zechariah saw it all centuries before   Zechariah 9:9

The people would welcome Him with joy
Shouts of praise would fill the air
He would be riding an unbroken colt

He came to fulfill the scriptures

His birth in Bethlehem  Micah 5:2
His virgin birth  Isaiah 7:14
His rejection by men  Isaiah 53:3
His substitutionary death  Isaiah 53:5-6

This is the heart of the Gospel  1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Our Lord was all He said He was
The scriptures guarantee Him

Jesus Ascended To Jerusalem To Die For Sinners

read Luke 19:41-44

The love of Jesus brought Him to this earth

The love of Jesus brought Him to Jerusalem

His arrival would motivate His enemies
His arrival would lead to the cross

See his compassion for those who would crucify Him

He beheld the city, and wept over it   Luke 19:41
He mourned for their coming sorrows   Luke 19:42-44
He wept because they had missed their time   Luke 19:44

Conclusion

Luke 21:12 But before all this, they will take you and be very cruel to you, giving you up to the Synagogues and to prisons, taking you before kings and rulers, because of my name.
13 And it will be turned to a witness for you.
14 So take care not to be troubled before the time comes, about what answers you will give:
15 For I will give you words and wisdom, so that not one of those who are against you will be able to get the better of you, or to put you in the wrong.
16 But you will be given up even by your fathers and mothers, your brothers and relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death.
17 And you will be hated by all men, because of me.
18 But not a hair of your head will come to destruction.
19 By going through all these things, you will keep your lives.
20 But when you see armies all round about Jerusalem, then be certain that her destruction is near.
21 Then let those who are in Judaea go in flight to the mountains; and those who are in the middle of the town go out; and let not those who are in the country come in.
22 For these are the days of punishment, in which all the things in the Writings will be put into effect.
23 It will be hard for women who are with child, and for her with a baby at the breast, in those days. For great trouble will come on the land, and wrath on this people.
24 And they will be put to death with the sword, and will be taken as prisoners into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be crushed under the feet of the Gentiles, till the times of the Gentiles are complete.
25 And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; and on the earth, fear among the nations and doubt because of the loud noise of the sea and the waves;
26 Men´s strength will go from them in fear and in waiting for the things which are coming on the earth; for the powers of the heavens will be moved.
27 And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with power and great glory.
28 But when these things come about, let your heads be lifted up, because your salvation is near.

Luke 19:28 And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
29 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.

38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
