Barabbas or Christ

Matthew 27:15-26

Pilate: The Most Uncomfortable Man In Jerusalem.

Faced with a decision he doesn´t want to make.
Under pressure from the Jews to crucify Jesus.
Urged by his wife to have nothing to do with Christ.

Pilate Tried One More Time To Free Christ.

The custom of freeing a prisoner at the feast verse 15.
Could this be a way of not having to decide about Jesus?

The Contrast Between Barabbas And Christ

read Matthew 27:16-18

A choice between a sinner and the Savior.

Who was Barabbas?

A well known criminal verse 16.
Guilty of insurrection and murder Mark 15:7.
Luke refers to him as a murderer in Luke 23:24.
John calls him a thief in John 18:40.

Who was Jesus?

One who was falsely accused  Matthew 26:59-61.
One Whom Pilate believed to be innocent Matthew 27:24.
One in whom Pilate could find no fault John 19:4.

The Choice Between Jesus And Barabbas

read Matthew 27:20-24

Pilate offers the crowd a choice.

What a choice.

A choice between wickedness and righteousness.
A choice between sinfulness and holiness.
A choice between darkness and light.

We must make the same kind of choice daily.

The crowd was influenced by the priests and elders verse 20.

Don´t let others influence you to make the wrong decision.

The Consequences Of Choosing Freedom For Barabbas

The consequences for the people  Matthew 27:25.

"His blood be on us, and our children".
The suffering that followed.

The consequences for Jesus Matthew 27:26.

The scourging.
The crucifixion.

The consequences for Barabbas.

Jesus died in his place.
Guilty Barabbas was set free.

Conclusion

Jesus also died for you and me.

Trusting Him, we are set free.

Matthew 27:15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
